What Causes A Car To Overheat?
Engines often overheat due to problems with their cooling systems, like a leak, damaged water pump, faulty radiator fan, or clogged coolant hose. When heat can’t escape, the engine’s temperature surpasses normal levels and can result in permanent damage. Routine maintenance can help ensure each component of your engine is functioning properly. Signs Your Engine Is Overheating
The following signs point to an overheated engine, so be on the lookout!
- Hood hot to the touch
While your vehicle’s hood should feel warm when the engine is running, if you can’t touch it for more than 10 seconds without burning your hand, it is too hot. - Warning light illuminated or rising temperature gauge
If the light is flashing or the gauge has reached its maximum level, your engine’s temperature has climbed above normal levels. - Loud ticking noise
When oil overheats, it cannot properly lubricate your engine and you may hear a ticking sound. - Coolant on the ground
If you notice coolant on the ground under your vehicle, you may have a cooling system leak. Or your radiator’s overflow tank released some coolant to relieve pressure in an overheated engine.
What To Do When Your Car Is Overheating
If your vehicle overheats, our service professionals recommend the following:
- Turn off the air conditioner and turn on the heat to direct heat away from the engine.
- Safely pull over as soon as you can.
- Turn off your engine so that it can cool down for at least 15 minutes
- In the meantime, call your mechanic or trusted Service Center.
- Top off radiator fluid if you have it.
- Restart your car and drive to the nearest repair shop.
